Stanyan Street · San Francisco
Every morning,
something warm
is waiting.
A neighborhood bakery and coffee shop where the ovens start before dawn and the coffee is poured with attention. Come for the croissant — stay for the quiet.
Our story
A quiet place
to begin well.
Lava Java opened on Stanyan Street with a simple conviction: that the best mornings start with food made carefully and served without rush. We bake in small batches, grind our coffee to order, and believe that a well-made croissant deserves its own silence.
Our bakers arrive before sunrise. The sourdough ferments overnight. The espresso is pulled slowly. None of this is efficient — but efficiency was never the point. The point is that when you step inside, something real is happening, and you are welcome to stay for it.

Ingredients
What we make
From the oven,
to your hands.
Everything on our counter is made in-house, in small batches, beginning the night before.
Viennoiserie
Butter croissants, pain au chocolat, brioche, and seasonal fruit tarts — laminated by hand each morning.
Sourdough
A live starter fed daily. Our country loaves ferment for 36 hours — crusty, open-crumbed, worth the wait.
Coffee
Single-origin and carefully blended espressos, pour-overs, and filter coffees — roasted locally and pulled slowly.
Cakes & Sweets
Seasonal cakes, tarts, cookies, and petit fours — made with real butter, fresh fruit, and dark chocolate.
Breakfast
Simple, substantial morning plates — eggs, avocado, house-made granola, and fresh juice until noon.
Gifts & Orders
Custom cakes, holiday boxes, and bakery gift cards — order ahead and pick up when it suits you.
Our philosophy
Slow by choice,
never by accident.
We do not rush the dough. We do not rush the pour. We do not rush the customer through the door. In a city that prizes speed, we choose the opposite — and the result is something you can taste.
Our ingredients are sourced from local farms and trusted producers. Our recipes change with the seasons. Our space is designed to feel like a living room, not a transaction.
This is not a philosophy we perform. It is the only way we know how to make things.
